"Do you want to know the story of our lives? It's hurry, hurry...
Wait... Hurry, hurry... Hang on... Wait." - Chris Joannou

The Story...

Once upon a time there were three mates from Newcastle Australia. Daniel Johns, Benjamin Gillies, and Christopher Joannou (who's not in the band yet but he's a school friend at this point...) They had known each other for quite a while and had had some good times, including making poor Chris eat an orange crayon thinking it was cheese, and lots of surfing.

Daniel and Ben being bored and seeing that they couldn’t play any instruments at this point decided to start a RAP group just fool around... Imagine if they had kept that up?!?! *shudders*
The rap gig soon frizzled and died, thank goodness... And they bought some instruments! YES! So our mates decided that they wanted to play said instruments and taught each other how to play guitar and drums. Also seeing how a two person band has... ummm... limits... they got two more of their friends to join them so along came Chris to play bass and another mate named Tobin Finanne to play guitar and "Innocent Criminals" was formed.

As the story goes Innocent Criminals were, ummm how do I put this nicely... I can't, they sucked. With little or NO experience they banged and strummed away 'till the wee hours of most nights above Ben's garage (where they still practice to this day sometimes). Soon after though, Tobin moved to Europe and the other guys took another route.

Here's where the story gets more interesting... But isn't it already?!?! heh...
They played MANY shows around their area and in mid-1994 they entered themselves in a local radio contest with a VERY rough copy of Tomorrow and out of MANY entries they WON! The prize was a day at a recording studio and a video! Ohh spiffy!!! Out of that recording session came the "Tomorrow EP". BUT here's the clincher, all of a sudden people started requesting Tomorrow, in mass loads! It was even the most requested song on one station and these guys weren’t even signed! SO record execs started calling them! They signed to Murmur (A division of Sony Records) after much bidding between labels and their parents stepped up as their manager, considering their ages and that they were still in high school.

Somewhere in-between all of this they had decided that "Innocent Criminals" was not the name for of choice for them so they changed it to "Gruntruck" which unfortunately already used by a Seattle band... DAMN THE MAN!!
So one story goes while requesting "Sliver" by Nirvana and "Berlin Chair" by You Am I they decided to just write down "SilverChair", and it sounded good, so they kept it! Wait... Doesn't that story sound a bit umm.. silly? That’s just one of many stories, most of which aren’t true!
Another one is they took it from the C.S. Lewis book “THE SILVER CHAIR” but as Ben said on Rockline about their name, "There is a stupid story we used to tell people in interviews, but we actually made it up. The real story is there was a big list of names when we were changing our name from the Innocent Criminals, and we just liked silverchair the most." - hahaha, creative eh? And why the SMALL s?!?! Daniel thought the BIG S looked stupid, makes "S"ence to ME...

So they went into the studios and recorded "Frogstomp" over their Christmas vacation so they wouldn't miss ONE MINUTE of school. This first album broke them into the major success and started the loyal fan base including yours truly!
They have released FOUR unbelievable and amazing albums to-date, Frogstomp, Freak Show, Neon Ballroom and Diorama. With a fifth album YOUNG MODERN on the way after a long rest-and-relaxation period they all have established lives, wives, pets and are ready to come back with full-chair FORCE!
